The idea of creating an electric helicopter has been floating for a while. However, due to the weight of the batteries the idea was never transformed into reality, until now.

Due to the great improvements in battery technology, batteries became more lightweight and able to store more energy.

Recently the aircraft company Sikorsky announced the creation on an all-electric helicopter that will be powered by new generation lightweight batteries.

Dubbed Firefly, the helicopter has been based on Sikorsky’s S-300C trainer.

It is worth mentioning that the current helicopter uses a 200hp electric motor powered by lithium ion batteries. Previously such helicopters were powered by a 190hp 4-cylinder gas engine.

The presentation of the electric helicopter will take place at the EAA Airventure in Oshkosh. The Firefly is able to stay in the air for only 15 minutes.
