One of the most popular Japanese carmakers, Honda, has recently presented the design of its new Air Concept car, a compressed air vehicle.

It is worth mentioning that the Japanese auto giant showcased its green vehicle at the 2010 LA Auto Show’s Design Challenge competition.

One of the company’s main goals was to design a car that would weight less than 1,000lbs. Besides being very lightweight, Honda Air is able to carry up to 4 people.

The compressed air vehicle from Honda represents the company’s vision of a coastal cruiser for those who enjoy an aggressive lifestyle.

It would be interesting to note that designers of Honda Air were inspired by roller coasters and skydiving wing-suits.

Being powered by compressed air and a pneumatic regulator system, Honda Air makes use of turbo vacuums and external air-flow to produce tank pressure and thus extend its range which is 100 miles.

In order to create a lightweight compressed air vehicle, designers thought about using body panels and fairings made from vegetable-based polymers. In addition, the car’s cockpit was design is a way to increase the open air driving performance.
