Audi EV A2 – Compact Driverless Car with Built-in Wi-Fi

September 22nd, 2011

Having in mind the problems linked with traffic when people have to waste hours, the time that could be spent on something useful, designers at Audi decided to create the EV A2.

This is a new compact concept car from the famous carmaker. It was built to take over in car-stuffed areas and allows the driver to do other things such as for example using the built-in Wi-Fi to surf the web.

It would be interesting to note that Audi A2 was unveiled at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. It boasts a touchscreen user interface developed to help the driver by managing some peripheral duties like activating the high beams and windshield wipers.

In addition, the car does not have door handles as these function on gestural commands.

It is quite logical that the collaboration between Audi and Stanford led to the creation of such a driver-less vehicle.

The Electric Cadillac ELR to Be Launched Onto the Market

August 22nd, 2011

Currently there’s very little information about the new eco-friendly vehicle from Cadillac, but it is known that the car will have an electric propulsion system composed of a T-shaped lithium-ion battery, an electric drive unit, and a 4-cylinder 1.4-liter engine generator.

The vehicle will be able to show acceleration from 0 to 60 in 8.5 seconds. Being powered entirely by electricity (just like GM’s other famous car Volt) the Cadillac ELR will activate its extended-range mode as soon as the battery runs low on energy.

It is worth mentioning that the extended-range mode involves the activation of the gas-powered generator that allows the vehicle to run hundreds extra miles.

To recharge the vehicle’s battery pack it is required to simply plug it into the mains. The car makes use of the same Voltec powertrain as the Volt.

EDWARD – Original Eco-friendly Diwheel Vehicle

June 9th, 2011

EDWARD (short for “Electric Diwheel With Active Rotation Damping”) is another invention meant to make our lives eco-friendlier.

The electric vehicle was designed and developed by a team of students at the University of Adelaide.

The main distinction of EDWARD from other green vehicles is a set of two wheels joined together through an axle and other equipment.

The vehicle features a seat for the driver and driving mechanism. The place of the driver is found between the wheels facing the controls.

There’s no problem with balancing thanks to the orientation of the two-wheels.

In order to provide a rock-free ride, the team decided to equip its vehicle with dynamic lateral stability and slosh control. Thus they were able to reduce the gerbling effect, which was EDWARD’s biggest issue.

The drive can activate or de-activate the upper mentioned feature in case of forceful braking or rapid acceleration.

Volkswagen Aqua – New-Gen Eco-friendly Hovercraft Concept

May 27th, 2011

Chinese designer Yuhan Zhang has come up with a very original concept for Volkswagen called The Volkswagen Aqua, which represents a hovercraft of the future.

Graduate in Industrial Design at Xihua University, the student thought that the concept should be made using a lightweight and at the same time a very durable material.

According to the author of the concept, the vehicle could be used in lakes, rivers, coastal water or even on snow.

It would be interesting to note that the CDN Car Design Awards China committee included this vehicle in the “Chinese off-road Vehicle” category.

The Volkswagen Aqua features 2 motors. The main motor obtains power from a hydrogen fuel cell and it is used to drive the main fan. The latter inflates the skirt around the hovercraft and raises the vehicle just above the ground.

The other fans, located at the rear, are powered by individual electric motors. These fans are used to provide forward thrust and directional control. It is worth mentioning that the Volkswagen Aqua can accommodate two passengers.

China’s BYD to Launch the World’s Largest Fleet of Electric Buses

May 18th, 2011

The Chinese car-making company BYD has signed a contract to manufacture over 300 electric buses. Dubbed eBus-12, the vehicle represents another step of PRC to becoming greener.

It is worth mentioning that the fleet of all-electric buses will be launched for the 2011 International Universiade Games that will take place in Shenzhen.

One of the most impressive advantages of the bus is its ability to register a long range of 250 kilometers on a single charge. This has become possible due to a high quality Fe battery apparatus with environmentally-friendly rechargeable system. Despite the fact that the battery allows the vehicle to travel almost 250 kilometers per charge, with the fast recharge mechanism used in the vehicle’s battery it takes about 30 minutes to achieve 50 percent state of charge.

It’s for the first time that BYD has been given the task to create eco-friendly buses. It would be interesting to note that BYD is China’s leading company that specializes in high performance eco-friendly rechargeable batteries and other green technologies.

As soon as the buses become part of the transportation system of Shenzhen, it will become the largest fleet of electric buses in the world.

In order to create a pure electric vehicle, BYD decide to use in-wheel motor drive system along with Iron Phospate (Fe) Battery technology.

Besides, by using axle-free drive system, the company managed to create more rider-friendly buses that have their floors much lower compared to traditional buses.

Because the air-conditioning system requires a lot of energy, the company decided to equip its buses with solar panels mounted on the roof. The power collected by these solar panels is stored in the Fe Battery.

ARCadia V2 – Futuristic Electric Truck

May 6th, 2011

Statistics show that the CO2 emissions from different transportation sources have increased by 20 percent over the past 20 years.

Taking into consideration that a lot of emissions are generated by trucks, Designer Vil Tsimenzin decided to design ARCadia V2, an eco-friendly vehicle that makes use of alternative power source.

The truck is powered by a system composed of battery and airflow turbines. The designer says that the vehicle would have enough battery power for a slow speed (between 1 and 8 mph) to run for about 2.5 – 0.5 hours.

In addition, the design of the truck was made in a way so the wind flow could be wisely used by 5 turbines. According to Tsimenzin, the optimum capacities of the turbines have been calibrated in order to be properly effective. He gave a theoretical situation in which at a speed between 5 and 10 miles per hour the power production would generate a constant usage supply of electricity and the truck would not loose energy.

In case the truck exceeds the speed of 10mph this would initiate the complex recharging system that will start producing more clean power.
